Care for Traumatic Injuries
If you suffer a severe injury to your hand or wrist, our hand surgeons can use many techniques to restore function and appearance
Severe injuries of the hands are not uncommon and may result from severe burns, cuts or other trauma. These injuries may damage tendons, nerves, blood vessels, joints and bones and require advanced care by our specialized hand surgeons.
Our surgeons work to restore both the function and appearance of hands, wrists and arms with these techniques:
-
Replantation– We surgically reattach fingers, hands or arms that have been completely cut from the body. The goal of this surgery is to give back as much use of the injured area as possible. If the lost part cannot be reattached, we may recommend a device that substitutes for a missing part, called a prosthesis.
-
Grafting – We transfer skin, bone, nerves or other tissue from a healthy part of the body to repair the injured part.
-
Flap surgery – This complex procedure involves moving the skin along with its underlying fat, blood vessels and muscle from a healthy part of the body to the injured site.
-
Amputation– When there is a severe or deforming injury, we can perform the complete removal of the injured part, and coordinate recovery and use of a prosthetic replacement.
